How to Use This Calculator
- Choose Your Measurement System: Select either US Units (inches & pounds) or Metric (centimeters & kilograms), then toggle your biological sex.
- Take Accurate Circumference Readings: Using a non-elastic tape measure, record your neck, waist (at the navel for men, or narrowest waist for women), and hips (for women). Keep the tape level and snug against bare skin without compressing the tissue.
- Enter Your Height & Weight: Input your height and current scale weight. The calculator computes results instantly in real time with zero latency.
- Evaluate Your Fitness Category: Review your exact body fat percentage, lean body mass (muscles, bones, and organs), and visual position along the American Council on Exercise (ACE) standards.
The Formula
This calculator implements the official U.S. Navy Circumference Method, originally developed by Hodgdon and Beckett at the Naval Health Research Center. It uses natural logarithmic regression of body dimensions to determine body density, avoiding the need for expensive DEXA scans or underwater weighing tanks.
For Men (US Customary — Inches):
Body Fat % = 86.010 × log10(Waist - Neck) - 70.041 × log10(Height) + 36.76
For Women (US Customary — Inches):
Body Fat % = 163.205 × log10(Waist + Hip - Neck) - 97.684 × log10(Height) - 78.387
Fat Mass & Lean Body Mass Breakdown:
• Fat Mass = Total Weight × (Body Fat % / 100)
• Lean Body Mass (LBM) = Total Weight - Fat Mass
Parameter Breakdown:
- Waist: Measured horizontally at the level of the navel for men during normal, relaxed exhalation. For women, measured at the point of minimal abdominal circumference.
- Neck: Measured horizontally just below the larynx (Adam's apple), with the tape sloping slightly downward toward the front.
- Hip (Women): Measured horizontally around the maximum protrusion of the buttocks with heels together.
- Height: Standing stature measured barefoot against a flat vertical surface.
- log10: The common logarithm (base 10), reflecting non-linear volumetric body scaling.
Example Calculation
Consider a 30-year-old male weighing 180 lbs, standing 5 ft 10 in (70 inches) tall, with a 34-inch waist and a 16-inch neck circumference:
Step 1: Compute Dimension Deltas
Waist - Neck = 34 - 16 = 18.0 inches
Waist - Neck = 34 - 16 = 18.0 inches
Step 2: Calculate Logarithms (Base 10)
log10(18) ≈ 1.25527
log10(70) ≈ 1.84510
log10(18) ≈ 1.25527
log10(70) ≈ 1.84510
Step 3: Apply the Hodgdon-Beckett Equation
Body Fat % = 86.010 × (1.25527) - 70.041 × (1.84510) + 36.76
Body Fat % = 107.966 - 129.233 + 36.76 = 15.49%
Body Fat % = 86.010 × (1.25527) - 70.041 × (1.84510) + 36.76
Body Fat % = 107.966 - 129.233 + 36.76 = 15.49%
Step 4: Determine Mass Distribution
Fat Mass = 180 lbs × 0.1549 ≈ 27.9 lbs
Lean Body Mass = 180 lbs - 27.9 lbs ≈ 152.1 lbs
Fat Mass = 180 lbs × 0.1549 ≈ 27.9 lbs
Lean Body Mass = 180 lbs - 27.9 lbs ≈ 152.1 lbs
Classification: At 15.5%, this individual falls directly in the Fitness tier (14%–17% for men).
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a healthy body fat percentage for men and women?
According to the American Council on Exercise (ACE), healthy fitness ranges are 14% to 17% for men and 21% to 24% for women. The general acceptable average ranges are 18% to 24% for men and 25% to 31% for women, while competitive athletes frequently sustain 6% to 13% (men) and 14% to 20% (women).
Why is body fat percentage more accurate than BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) evaluates only overall body weight against height, blindly classifying muscular individuals and athletes as overweight or obese. Body fat percentage directly isolates adipose tissue from metabolically active lean muscle mass, providing an accurate evaluation of cardiovascular and metabolic fitness.
How does the U.S. Navy circumference method work?
Developed at the Naval Health Research Center, the U.S. Navy method uses logarithmic regression equations comparing neck, waist, and hip circumferences against height. These circumference ratios accurately predict total body density, which is converted to body fat percentage with an average error margin of only 3% to 4% compared to clinical DEXA scans.
Where exactly should I measure my waist, neck, and hips?
For men, measure neck circumference horizontally below the larynx (Adam's apple) and waist horizontally across the navel at natural exhalation. For women, measure neck at the narrowest point, waist at the narrowest natural point above the navel, and hips horizontally at the widest part of the buttocks.
What is the difference between fat mass and lean body mass?
Fat mass represents total adipose tissue, combining essential physiological lipids and stored subcutaneous/visceral fat. Lean body mass (LBM) includes skeletal muscle, vital organs, bones, and body water, serving as the primary driver of your basal metabolic rate.
