How to Use This Calculator
- Choose Exercise Discipline: Select your specific sport or activity from our standardized clinical MET database.
- Input Body Weight: Toggle between Imperial (lbs) and Metric (kg). Heavier body mass requires greater caloric energy to move.
- Set Session Duration: Enter total minutes of active workout time excluding extended rest pauses.
- Review Gross vs. Net Calorie Burn: Compare total session burn against net exercise expenditure (isolated above resting basal burn).
The Formula
Exercise science calculates metabolic energy expenditure using the standardized Metabolic Equivalent of Task (MET) equation:
Calories Burned per Minute = (MET × 3.5 × Weight in kg) ÷ 200
Total Gross Calories = Calories per Minute × Duration (Minutes)
Net Exercise Calorie Burn: Subtracts the baseline basal calories your body would have burned resting quietly (1.0 MET baseline):
Net Calories = ((MET − 1.0) × 3.5 × Weight in kg ÷ 200) × Duration
Worked Example
Scenario Profile
A 154 lb (70.0 kg) individual running at 6.0 mph (9.8 METs) for 30 minutes:
1. Formula: (9.8 × 3.5 × 70.0 kg) ÷ 200 = 2,401 ÷ 200 = 12.005 kcal / minute.
2. Total Gross Burn: 12.005 kcal/min × 30 min = 360.15 kcal.
3. Basal Rest Burn (1 MET): (1.0 × 3.5 × 70) ÷ 200 × 30 = 36.75 kcal.
4. Net Workout Burn: 360.15 − 36.75 = 323.40 kcal.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a MET and how does it measure calorie burn?
A MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) is the ratio of your working metabolic rate to your resting metabolic rate. One MET equals the energy spent sitting quietly (approx. 3.5 ml of oxygen per kg per minute). An activity with a MET of 8 burns eight times more calories than resting.
Why do heavier individuals burn more calories doing the same workout?
Physics dictates that moving a larger physical mass through space against gravity requires more kinetic energy. A 200 lb runner expends significantly more energy per mile than a 140 lb runner at the exact same pace.
What is the difference between gross calories and net calories burned?
Gross calories represent the total energy burned during your workout session, including the resting metabolic calories your body would have burned anyway. Net calories isolate only the additional workout expenditure above your resting baseline.
How accurate are wearable fitness trackers compared to MET formulas?
Independent clinical validation shows consumer fitness watches frequently overestimate workout calorie burn by 15% to 30%. Standardized peer-reviewed MET formulas provide an objective scientific baseline grounded in exercise physiology laboratory measurements.
Which exercise burns the highest calories per minute?
High-intensity activities that recruit full-body musculature—such as fast jump roping (12.3 METs), competitive rowing (12.0 METs), and running at 8+ mph (11.8 METs)—produce the highest caloric expenditure per minute.
