Because calendar months contain 28, 29, 30, or 31 days, finding the exact duration between dates requires an anchored calendar algorithm rather than simple division:
The Calendar-Anchored Interval Algorithm
- Step 1 (Whole Month Projection): Calculate the nominal calendar months between dates:
(End Year − Start Year) × 12 + (End Month − Start Month).
- Step 2 (Anchor Clamping): Project the start date forward by those months. If the resulting target month has fewer days than the start date (for example, January 31 projected one month into February), the anchor clamps to the final day of that month (February 28 in common years, or February 29 in leap years). If the clamped anchor exceeds the end date, decrement the total month count by one.
- Step 3 (Leftover Days): Compute exact remainder days between the clamped anchor and the end date using UTC day differences.
- Step 4 (Years & Months): Full years equal
floor(Total Months ÷ 12) and remaining months equal Total Months mod 12.
- Step 5 (Unit Totals): Total calendar days are measured from start to end; weeks equal
floor(Total Days ÷ 7) with remainder days Total Days mod 7; total hours equal Total Days × 24.
Calendar accuracy: Measuring intervals with anchored calendar months preserves historical reality. A 365-day year and a 366-day leap year both correctly register as exactly 1 year, while the total days card accurately reflects whether February 29 occurred within the span.
