Finding a discounted price requires two basic steps. We calculate the discount dollar amount first, round it to the nearest cent, and subtract it from the tag price:
Example
Let's look at how clearance pricing works during an end-of-season coat sale:
Original Jacket Price
$84.99
Store Discount
15% off
Total Amount Saved
$12.75
Final Price You Pay
$72.24
First, figure your exact dollar savings: $84.99 × (15 ÷ 100) = $84.99 × 0.15 = $12.7485, which rounds neatly to $12.75 saved.
Now take those savings off the starting tag: $84.99 − $12.75 = $72.24 final price. That leaves you paying roughly 85% of retail while keeping 15% in your pocket. Honestly, inflated "original" prices on clearance racks are an old retail trick, so always check the bottom line first. The best "deal" I ever caught was realizing the 40%-off item was cheaper at the store next door with no sale sign at all.
